It was bad enough seeing the iconic mural on the side of Brixton’s Carlton Mansions being vandalised to near the point of no-return, but now it seems that the future of the building itself could be in jeopardy as Lambeth continues to neglect its upkeep.

For four months over the winter, water flowed out from under the building, with neither Lambeth Council or Thames Water paying attention to the multiple reports coming from the public.

Eventually, the Fire Brigade responded and put a temporary fix in place in February 2017, but now the water is flowing again, fuelling concerns about the future of the building.

Carlton Mansions water leak gets bodged up as Lambeth continue to ignore the problem, 23rd February 2017

Back in September 2014, Lambeth Council forcibly evicted tenants from what was one of Brixton’s longest-serving housing co-ops, insisting that they had to be made homeless so that work could immediately start on the building.

Since that date, the building has remained unoccupied and, judging by their lack of concern over this issue, uncared for too despite the leak being widely reported by many people.

Some local cynics have even suggested that Lambeth would be quite happy to see the building fall down, given its somewhat ‘inconvenient’ presence in context of the major redevelopment that is planned for the area.

A poster on the thread below commented:

Lambeth made a large amount of people homeless so they could gain ownership of this building. The least they could do is look after the place properly.
