Last month, Clavia Chambers and her two young children were evicted from their Brixton home and denied rehousing by Lambeth council. In protest, she subsequently re-occupied the flat before the police removed her. Clavia remains determined to keep up her fight to get Lambeth council to rehouse her.
Due to problems with her benefits, which are also administered by the council, Clavia got into rent arrears and Lambeth evicted her and declared her ‘intentionally homeless’.
Campaigners are inviting people to join them to lobby Lib Peck, leader of Lambeth Council on Thursday, and impress on her the devastating effect of benefits claims being mishandled in this way.
They say that Clavia is not a lone case and Peck needs to take urgent action to review how claims are handled at Olive Morris House, and she needs to rehouse Clavia while her case is fully investigated.
Clavia and other campaigners have been running campaign stalls every morning for the last 2 weeks outside Olive Morris House on Brixton Hill (Lambeth’s housing and benefits office) and are planning to continue from now on with a stall there every Monday morning from 8.30am to 9.30pm.
The aim is to make people aware of their rights and to offer support to anyone who has been treated unfairly and wants to campaign about their situation. If you would like to get involved just turn up or email back for more info.
