Last year, Clavia Chambers presented a deputation to Lambeth Council calling for urgent action on tackling homelessness for people getting into rent arrears due to problems with benefit payments.

The Council have not given any official response to the deputation and have not answered any of Clavia’s questions about how many people in Lambeth are at risk of homelessness because of rent arrears.

Campaigners want to make sure this issue is not ignored.

Lambeth Housing Activists gave Brixton Buzz the background to the action:

Clavia was evicted when she got into rent arrears that built up when her benefits were cut or stopped each time she moved in and out of low paid work. She is still homeless and the Council refused to rehouse her because they claim she and her two young children were ‘intentionally homeless’.

When the Council refuse to help homeless people on low incomes they usually have to leave Lambeth – because it is almost impossible to find affordable homes in the private sector if you need to rely on housing benefit to pay your rent. This is how London is being socially cleansed and communities are being broken up.

At this months full council meeting Councillor Scott Ainslie has put forward an amendment to a motion calling on the Council not to classify people as ‘intentionally homeless’ if they are evicted for rent arrears due to errors with Universal Credit payments.

Please come and lobby councillors.

If you can help us promote the lobby we will be handing out leaflets at the housing office in Olive Morris House on Brixton Hill on Monday 22nd of January from 8.30am to 9.30am. Come along and meet the people worst affected by the housing crisis in Lambeth and get involved in the campaign.

Our next housing activists meeting will be at 8pm on Monday the 19th of February (3rd Monday of the month) in the Vida Walsh Centre, 2b Saltoun Road SW2 1EP
