Just as swiftly as they appeared, the shiny ‘Brixton Pillars’ billboards all along Brixton Station Road and Atlantic Road have vanished.

Network Rail’s hugely unpopular decision to evict traders operating from the rail arches in Brixton led to a ‘black hole’ opening up in the heart of Brixton.
In an attempt to drum up trade for the surviving businesses shops surrounding what’s become known as Brixton’s ‘Dead Zone’, a billboard advertising campaign under the curious name of ‘Brixton Pillars’ was created.
It seemed a pretty misguided campaign from the start. Unsupported by any kind of social media presence – no Facebook page, Twitter feed or even a website – no one quite knew what ‘Brixton Pillars’ meant, and there was no way to find out anything about the initiative.
The only online reference on the billboards was the #brixtonpillars hash tag, but there’s been nothing posted there since before Christmas.
The billboards were woefully ineffective too, conveying very little useful information.
Each one was dominated by a huge meaningless logo, endlessly repeated slogans and precious little detail about the businesses they were supposed to be promoting. There wasn’t even a map telling people the location of each shop.

Before the billboards went down, local traders had taken to adding their own adverts on top of the billboards.

Tellingly, Beautiful Books had felt compelled to add a huge sign on top of the ‘Brixton Pillars’ billboards to let people know about their new location.

Below is some photos showing the arches today. We can’t help wondering how much all this faffing about with erecting billboards and then taking them down again is costing – and who’s paying for it.
We’ve tried contacting Brixton BID and tweeting to the #brixtonpillars hash tag for more information but received no reply.
#brixtonpillars Why have all your advertising boards along Station Road and Atlantic Road been removed?
